Teach me Coco Chanel!

Dear Coco...

I was talking with my friend yesterday about an almost-spiritual experience she had as a result of one of your products enlabled with the iconic double C.

It was a typical Fall day with cool breezes and dark clouds; being the shop-a-holic that she is she decided to go to Saks 5th Ave. looking for a new purse. She walked pass the plethora of Mercedes, Bentleys and SUVs that normally endrench the parking lot of Frontenac Plaza and pulled back one of the freshly polished brass handles to enter the store. She went pass the display of Monolos, pass the jungle of Burberry plaid scarves, and then she turned a corner to find the new object of her affection...a black and white, leather, Coco Chanel bag. It was as if the grey clouds had parted and the sun was shining to brighten her day...birds were chirping, children were skipping by, red and yellow balloons were flying in the air...it was all she needed to have a great day..week...maybe even year. With her hand shaking nervously she reached for the tag to find that this combination of two flaps of leather and zipper cost not 1, not 2, but $1,700!?!? "Oh #$%#%" she thought. Her head hung low, "how will I ever afford that?"..."hey, maybe I can go without much food or gas for the next several months..."

A few questions come to my mind for you Coco.

1. What do I need to do to become that marketable so I can charge two or three house payments for leather? (This is where the teaching comes in...see title)

2. When will the Western world wake up and see that most people in 3rd-world countries could survive a whole year on the the amount of money we are willing to spend for a new pair of jeans?

3. My initials are NG...could you work on a nice design that would look good on the likes of Paris, Lindsay, or even Justin? I'm looking at big loan payments when I finally get done with school...you could also use SWC.

Thank you for your help...

Sincerely,
Nathan Gemayel

Comments

Maybe Chanel #5 should be Chanel # $5000.

I agree, our material driven society has reached a new limit (credit limit). I have succumbed to the pressure of buying out of my economic class oblivious all the while this behavior is a negotiation with my future to which the me in ten years doesn't even get to respond. No longer WWJD now WWJB (what would Jesus buy?)

Mo money, mo problems!

It is redonkulous these girls spend on a purse to hold their junk! Come on girls! Go to Target and get a bag and listo. Spend the remaining 1,690 dollars for oh I donīt know, common sense. Let your true and natural beauty shine and not your bling!

I have to admit all my make-up is Chanel. I also have to admit I like to buy expensive stuff over cheap stuff. I know its STUFF and maybe I'm shallow for buying Chanel. I donno. I know that most people are uneducated about abject povery and 3rd world issues. I know most Americans think there is only America. I think people need to do do do, not talk talk talk. Anyone can write a check and feel good. Chanel will always be here. The issue is your friend.

Sweet chicken,
Look at all these good comments. Mo, nice use of the word "listo" it's exciting to see another spanish-speaking person that I can speak spanglish with...it's so contento. Mary Ellen, thanks for being honest. I don't know...I think it's OK, maybe?, perhaps? to spend money on things...even a lot of money, at times. I mean, art is not cheap. Howev, after watching a little bit about the Sudanese crisis I can't help but wonder what would happen if we were all determined to max out our cards to get help to a group of 2 million refugees in dire need of help.
Anyway, I'm definetly (cannot spell that word) not guiltless in this problem. I obviously don't lust after a Chanel bag...but put a great cd in front of me...or a DVD and I'm sold, or, rather the cd/DVD is sold. Anyway, just need to remind myself that "cool" doesn't mean I own this particular cd, and that this DVD will not make all my problems go away. All that to say, I still have a ways to go in my own spending habits! Thanks for the responses!
Nathan
