Nathan's Top Ten Singles of 2007: #2
#2: Irreplaceable by Beyonce
'Irreplaceable' is a classic R&B song full of attitude and sass. This is a black woman with convictions...she's awesome. Oh, I didn't mention that it was Billboard's #1 song of the year...#1 for 10 weeks straight back at the beginning of the year. Go B! Check out this performance by a Swedish girl gettin' her Beyonce on.

Nathan's Top Ten Singles of 2007: #3
#3: Brave by Jennifer Lopez
OK, so I know I'm putting a Jennifer Lopez song on my list. Rollingstone compared this song to early Madonna and suggested that it was her best performance ever, Entertainment Weekly pushed 'Brave' to be the lead single for the album of the same name. I enjoy the fact that a pop song can still be released without going straight to the bedroom. Don't expect 'Brave' to change your life, it's not the Shins for crying out loud...HA!, but the song's a good one. Go J.Lo!
One of Lopez's fans made this video for 'Brave.' Hope you like it...enjoy!

Nathan's Top Ten Singles of the Year: #4
#4: Paper Planes by M.I.A.
First of all, this Sri Lankan/Brit-rapper brings correct far more than Fergie or Gwen ever tried to. The track to this song picks up where Bucky Done Gun left off...one of the most incredible tracks I've ever heard. I hope you dig the video...some couple decided to make up a dance to 'Paper Planes.' I'm pretty sure it's a joke...at least I hope so. Enjoy!

Eckstein Gone...Really?
What is going on in the world of Cardinals Baseball? First Jimmy gets the 'Family Fued X', now David Eckstein? I can't believe we are saying goodbye to the 2006 MVP. The small but scrappy player was a favorite among St. Louisans. He played shortstop and stole bases like nobody! Just this past season Eckstein batted .309, which is very good, had 31 RBIs and stole 10 bases.

Eckstein claims that he and his agent were in talks with the baseball club about a contract, but wanted to put things on hold during the season. The Cardinals claim that they had made him an offer, to which they received no response from Eckstein or his people. Who knows what really happened? Although after watching an interview with David himself on Tuesday night, it sure sounds like they're kicking him to the curb. Bummer...he was one of my faves.
Thank you David Eckstein! You'll be missed...hope you like playing baseball in the snow. You do, eh? Good for you, not for us.

Nathan's Top Ten Singles of the Year: #5
#5: Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood
I know what you're thinkin..."Oh my gosh Nathan, this song has nothing about grace to do with it." I completely agree with you. It totally falls in with the age-old practice of loving the Lord one minute and going in the other direction the next, which happens often in the country tradition. Carrie Underwood, the same girl that sang 'Jesus Take the Wheel' just a couple of years ago brought us the ultimate get-back-at-your-cheatin'-partner song. I love it. I also love the fact that my mom asked who sang that song about, and I quote, "and carved her name into his legacy."
You got to hear the chipmunks sing this one...enjoy!

Goodbye Jimmy!
This past weekend it was announced that center-fielder Jim Edmonds would be headed out west to play with the San Diego Padres. As a Cardinal, Edmonds became a mainstay with the baseball club. He won six of his eight Golden Gloves and played with the All-Star team three years.

If you don't remember much about Edmonds, he was responsible for our trip to the World Series back in 2004 when he hit a homerun against Astros' powerhouse pitcher Roger Clemens in the 12th season. At that point and for the next two years he had helped to lead the Red Birds towards much success, in both his hitting game as well as his outfield responsibilities.
Although it is sad to see him go, Jimmy was one of the familiar faces of the Cards...he was a Pujols, or a Scotty, his game has gone down since he began his refurbished contract of some $19 million. This change will allow our hometown team some leverage financially in our search for a pitcher with an arm that works well, something we need.
So, goodbye, and thank you! Your mad skills in the outfield will be missed.

Nathan's Top Ten Singles of the Year: #6
#6: The Way I Are by Timbaland
I love this song because Timbaland managed to mix both Hip-Hop and Eurotrashy Electronic. The beat and track to this song makes you move! I found this song to be refreshing on the hip-hop side of things...why? Timbaland actually has something to say that's doesn't involve Crystal, benjamins, and/or 'big-booty' women. Seeing as how Timbaland was the producer of the year and had a few hit songs, not to mention a #1 album, I figured I had to put something of his on the list.
You got to see this guy's moves. He's incredible! Hope you enjoy!

Atonement
I just got back from a private screening of 'Atonement' (that's right, I'm swanky). The film, which received 7 Golden Globe nominations just this morning, is an incredible tale of a couple in love but broken apart through means they couldn't control. I won't divulge much of the story, only to tell you that the cruel intentions of a younger sister are to blaim.

The movie has everything that an epic love story should...undying devotion, passion, incredible acting, a musical score that would make John Williams jeolous, and beautiful scenery along the way. I can't stop thinking about how beautiful this picture was. There are some stellar scenes: in one, Keira Knightly's character is wearing a long flowy green dress and she looks riveting, and another where the two main characters are shown back and forth looking in their own seperate mirrors, and another where James McAvoy's character is walking along the Northern shores of a war-torn France that will remain in mind everytime of I think of 'Atonement.' I predict that 'Atonement,' if nothing else, will receive Oscar nominations for cinematography and costume design.
The acting among McAvoy and Knightly was outstanding...I couldn't help but think of other performances that fit this genre, Cold Mountain, Out of Africa, The English Patient...Atonement fits right in. I should note that there is one scene that involves sex and another small part of the film that might offend people...no film is perfect, just so you know.
Obviously, I loved this movie! Go see it soon!

Nathan's Top Ten Singles of the Year: #7
#7: Glamorous by Fergie
OK, I know what you're thinking..."Really, Fergie? Really?" I love this song. I still have not gotten tired of hearing Fergie go, "G L A M O R O U S...we're flyin' first class, up in the sky, champagne, livin' the life..." It's great. Everytime I hear it I think of the "dance parties" we would have in the kitchen at Kaldi's in Kirkwood...well, they were more like 2-minute dance parts, if you will. Anyway, Stef, and Katie, and Jimmy, and Cathy, Mary Ellen...we'd all be jammin' to the song. Hope you enjoy...you can even sing along to this one.

Nathan's Top Ten Singles of the Year: #8
#8: Afraid by Nelly Furtado
I first heard this song at my friend's house this summer. I came out of the bathroom and heard this Eurotrashy electronic sound that had great words, "So afraid what people might say, that's OK, cause you are only human. Want to be a leader, not a follower..." As the words go on, so does the beat, which is provided by Timbaland, who had one Hell of a year himself. Anyway, the best version I could find of this one was by Nelly Furtado in a Sims version of the video...pretty histerical, however, there is an unfortunate offset between the lips moving and the words being sung. Hope you enjoy!

Lars and the Real Girl!
I saw an incredible movie this past week called, ‘Lars and the Real Girl.’ Although the film is one of the oddest movies I’ve ever seen I enjoyed it a lot. Why? I guess because the movie was corky, the acting was incredible, and the story was lovely.
In case you don’t know the basis of ‘Lars and the Real Girl,’ it is a story about a guy who develops a relationship with a woman who doesn’t have a soul…because she’s a blow-up doll. That’s right, a blow-up doll. As stupid and juvenile as the plot sounds, it’s really about a guy who’s been hurt by family dynamics and needs to work out his pain in an odd way. The funny thing is that you start to get what’s going on about halfway through the film and then you find yourself with compassion for this peace of plastic.

Another great aspect of the film is that the whole town eventually supports Lars in this weird state of being. They recognize how strange this behavior is, but, in order for Lars to be “fixed” he has to be taken care of first. I don’t want to give too much away, only to say that ‘Lars and the Real Girl’ was a warm story with a lot of heart and great acting. Go see Ryan Gossling, (who will receive a Golden Globe nomination tomorrow for this role), give a spectacular, yet grounded performance…nothing about it was over-the-top, just good, and real.

Nathan's Top Ten Singles of the Year: #9
This just in...Grammy nominations came out yesterday and two of my Top Ten songs were nominated for for Song and/or Record of the Year!
#9: 'Stay' by Sugarland
I heard Sugarland do this song live at the CMA's a few weeks back. I was impressed by the voice on the lead singer, Jennifer Nettles, so strong. I hope you enjoy the rendition by a couple from somewhere in the States.

Nathan's Top Ten Singles of the Year: #10
It is during the end of the year that everyone puts together their lists for the best in every category. I therefore have decided to put together my own list of the top ten songs of 2007. Although it was an 'off' year in my opinion for music, (none of my favorite bands/solo artists released cds), there were some great songs that came out.
Through the next couple of weeks I'll be counting down the list starting with #10. You will probably be surprised by some that make the list, for this reason, I will explain how I came up with the lucky group of artists, who will receive an unbelievable amount of SWAG at a later date...also a trophy in the shape of my smile. Anyway, how I came up with the top ten was to look at a few categories: originality compared to what's on pop-radio today, staying power, (Will this be a song that many people would love to hear on the radio in 2017?), and last but certainly not least, my favor, (How much did I really like the freakin' song to begin with?).
I must give the ultimate of disclaimers here: this is a POP RADIO list...you won't find Iron & Wine or other cool indie bands on this list...sorry. Seeing as how we live in the 'YouTube" era, I've decided to not go with the obvious move of having the original singer perform the song, but performances of the song by other people. Whether it be a group of college students or a Swedish girl with a European accent, the whole world loves pop music, if even just a little bit.
#10: The Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani
Any song that reminds me of old-school Madonna is automatically a winner. The sugary-bubble-gum lyrics and music is so sweet. I instantly fell in love with this song the first time I heard the woo-hoos. I have no idea what Stefani says in the middle of the chorus when she sings real fast...somethin' about the refrigerator and messing everything up and some other stuff...it doesn't matter though, the song's a gem.
Hear to perform 'The Sweet Escape' is one of Harvard's acapella choirs:

Van Gogh on with Your Bad Self

Most days I'm OK with being single, I know God's hand works in everything...but there are times when I get tired of being patient. I'm ready to be with the woman of my life. OK, not going to mope and groan about my poor single life without a girlfriend/wife. However, I will say that a few weeks ago I wrote a post about how this time of year highlights the hard/sad things of life...I would say this is my 'hard/sad' thing, and today is one of those days where I feel very single, which brings me to the Van Gogh painting. What a dark image it is, and yet there is a couple at the front of the scene who seem to be very content. I can be content as well. There is an importance to understanding what is reality. Although not in a relationship, I've been provided with many friends that are real and authentic and present; I have reason to be OK with where I am. Things don't seem to be as dark in life as they are in this picture...and even if they were, I have reason to be thankful. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't think the couples' contentment comes from being with each other, because I can't help but think it does. However, the truth is that contentment comes from God, and suffering well in darkness comes from Him also. It is in relationships that we are able to realize this truth better. Maybe that's what I see in the couple...the reassurance of faith in each other when things have gone bad. I look forward to a day when I have that and can provide that for another person. Until that day arrives, God is the lover of my soul, He provides for me through great friends and keeps my heart warm...even when I feel lonely. I guess the issue I've addressed here has not been about singleness so much as contentment. Obviously, the two kind of go hand-in-hand for me. Ha!
